If you’re like me, when you started searching around for resources on how to live clean and eat healthy, there were a few things about essential oils that kept coming up. Or, maybe even some friends have been talking about it.
Whatever the case, I get it – I’ve got a whole page dedicated to essential oils.
I think I was a teenager when I started using them to make my room smell nice – that’s what I thought they were for back then. I found this oil warmer on amazon that comes close to what mine would have looked like.
Little did I know that heating essential oils changes their properties, almost eradicating any of their benefits than if let’s say, you were diffusing them…Anyway, so that happened.
Then about 1.5-2 years ago, I was getting a lot of headaches at work. I used to sit close to a friend of mine who overheard me talking about said headaches – let’s call her Isabelle to protect her privacy.
So Isabelle told me about Peppermint Halo by Sage. She knew by the look on my face that I wasn’t into it, the fact is, she wasn’t either… she started telling me that she knew what I was thinking and when her friend told her about it, she felt the same way. She also said that when she finally gave in and bought it, it was a game-changer.
Isabelle was swearing by it – she reduced the number of headache pills she was taking, she wasn’t getting as many headaches, and when she did, they typically weren’t as bad…and since Isabelle was one of those people that does her research and doesn’t take making recommendations lightly, I thought – what the hey – I’ll give it a whirl too. Besides, if I can avoid taking a pill, I will.
So I went into the Sage store in the PATH in Toronto, which was perfect timing because I had a headache to begin with.
Sidebar: If you’re in Toronto, the PATH is a fun little way to get a taste of what people do when it’s cold and raining – it’s like and underground world of shopping, food courts, and lots more fun in maze form! Don’t worry, there’s always a way up to the street-level if you get lost.
Ok, so back to Sage… When I went in, I had told the salesperson what I was there for when she asked, and she went to show me where to find what I needed. She asked me if I had been there or used oils before, so when I said no, she gave me a little overview of essential oils, and showed me the Head Soother Kit, which comprised of not only Peppermint Halo, but also a Stress Release Mist and a Peppermint Halo Wand.
Was she really trying to upsell me? I entertained the idea and let her demo all three on me – For the Peppermint Halo (roller), she said that I could roll it along my forehead, on my temples, the back of my neck, anywhere where I was feeling the pain or tension. So I did. She told me I could use the Wand to get at other areas of my head (like a tide to go pen without the rubbing). So, I did a spot at the top and back of my head.
If you’ve ever been to a spa or had a cream that had peppermint, you know that it has this cool and calming sensation – that’s what it felt like on, and the smell of lavender was even more relaxing. I could feel my headache melting away. Was this actually happening?
Then came the Stress Release Mist – she sprayed it 3-5 times above my head and asked me to inhale deeply… I was in heaven… I forgot about what was around me, and for a moment, forgot why I was there in the first place.
She then went on to explain the ingredients, and the fact that they were all natural, made with essential oils.
In the Peppermint Halo Roller and Wand there was..
- peppermint (mentha piperita)
- eucalyptus (eucalyptus globulus)
- cajeput (melaleuca cajuputi)
- rosemary (rosmarinus officinalis)
- lavender (lavandula angustifolia)
- vetiver (vetivera zizanoides)
and in the Stress Release Mist, there was…
- lavender (lavandula angustifolia)
- orange (citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) peel oil)
- roman chamomile (anthemis nobilis)
- vetiver (vetivera zizanoides)
- geranium (pelargonium graveolens)
- clary sage (salvia sclarea)
- myrtle (myrtus communis)
- purified water
Wouldn’t you know? All natural essential oils. No alcohol or other additives, no pills, just straight-up natural healing power.
So, I bought the kit, naturally haha. She totally upsold me… Isabelle may have been jealous 😉 Fast-forward to 2018, and now I use essential oils in my everyday life.
It started when my friend’s cousin – let’s call her Elle to protect her privacy – reached out to share how she’s been using Young Living. She saw my announcement about getting certified as a Wellness Coach and doing Wellness Retreats, and thought I’d be interested in learning more about essential oils.
Indeed I was.
If the above stories weren’t enough, I learned about essential oils and natural healing topics like digestion and stress, by way of recommended readings or training material at the IAWP where I got my Wellness Coaching Certification, so my curiosity was peaked.
Using non-toxic products, natural ingredients when cooking, making my own self-care and beauty products – these were all on my list…
At first, again, I was skeptical, just like when Isabelle was telling me about her using Peppermint halo to help with headaches, Elle was telling me how essential oils help with holistic wellness.
What I knew so far certainly supported her argument, so I went deeper. I researched and researched, compared and compared, and in the end, all that was left to do was try them out, and see for myself if everything I’ve been hearing and reading was true.
I decided to enroll as a Young Living member to get the 24% savings and got a Premium Starter Kit for €172 – in Canada, for $200 CDN.
There are other starter kits like the Thieves Starter Kit, which I personally got the second month after joining to replace all my household cleaners, but I chose this one to start because I got a Dew Drop Diffuser, which I’ve always wanted anyway PLUS I was getting the basic essential oils and some other good stuff, and saving over 50% on everything that came with it. woohoo!
PS Peppermint and Lavender are two of the oils it comes with 🙂
Some may say that’s expensive, but your future self will thank you, and Young Living doesn’t make you buy anything after that – if you want to buy one off’s, you can, if you don’t want anything, that’s cool too…some people even use Young Living as a means of earning extra income. The other nice thing is that your membership automatically inactivates after a year if you don’t use it, and if you want to keep it after the first year, you spend $50/year – replenishing what you’ve run out of or trying new stuff would do it, but again, no pressure either way.
Whatever direction you go in, your future self will thank you…. thank you for relieving stress after a hard day, for helping to sleep on those restless nights, for making meals so tasty, for saving money on products that are more expensive in the end, or worse, that contained harmful chemicals, for choosing the best quality food and ingredients to keep the body healthy, active, and free of toxins, and thank you for all the love 🙂
Investing in your health and wellness is always a good idea when it’s done right.
It’s important that you know I am not a doctor, and any information presented should not be viewed as medical advice.
I’m just sharing the love… I use essential oils in my cooking, to help with digestion, to enhance my mood, to relieve stress, to relax, to focus, to help keep my immune strong, to give me inspiration and motivation, to make non-toxic, natural self-care and cleaning products… I mean, the list is endless…
Once you start, you really do wonder how you lived without them.
One thing to note, just like plants have a dark side, so do essential oils, and that’s not to scare you, but for you to know that it’s important to be safe and use essential oils as they’re intended in the recommended doses. Pay particular attention if you have allergies, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you plan on using with your kids or babies. #safetyfirst
Even more importantly, the essential oils you are using need to be of the best quality, I know… I said that… but this is a biggie.
When I joined Young Living I knew I was getting quality, but what I didn’t fully appreciate was the amazing, supportive community that I was joining as well. People from all experience levels that are passionate about leading a life free of chemicals and giving themselves and their families the very best! We share all kinds of things from DIY to recipes to essential wellness and other fun topics.
If you want to join our Facebook Community and see what it’s all about, no purchases necessary ever, just click HERE and I’ll get you added and send you a link to my free Getting Started With Essential Oils eBook.
Outside of Young Living, I work with many health professionals, like my doctor, who are always really open to discussing things if I’m ever unsure.
