This week on my Live Training, I talked about Gut Health with my good friend Sandra Brun.

We actually run a page together out of our love for essential oils & holistic health, which is what we ended up naming our Facebook Group.

Feel free to join us if that’s your jam.

January was all about Gut Health, but what is it really, why is it important, and how do we know we have good or bad gut health, and if it’s bad, how do we improve it?

So many questions… now, before I move on, you may want to download this PDF – it actually goes along with our presentation, but we didn’t want to run this as a webinar. (Sidebar, would you sign up for a free webinar around gut health? – let me know in the comments.

I’m going to briefly touch on what we talked about, but I would say go to the video, it’s about 38 minutes, but lots of good info!

What is Gut Health?

Numerous studies in the past two decades have demonstrated links between gut health and the immune system, mood, mental health, autoimmune diseases, endocrine disorders, skin conditions (Source).

It’s the quality of bacteria – prebiotics and probiotics – and the amount of fiber you consume in a day. I use Life 9 because it has 17 million live cultures from 9 of the best strains, it’s plant based, infused with essential oils and is not only great for my digestive health, but also overall immune support.

It’s the level of your energy and optimal body function. The gut produces about 80% of the body’s serotonin and dopamine. Those are said to be the happy hormones.

It’s managing addictions to sugar for example. The less variety the stronger the addiction.

It’s eating organic so that we don’t consume pesticides that kill our gut bacteria.

It’s normal bowel movements, overall bowel health, your cholesterol, your blood sugar…

It’s supporting your ability to manage your weight.

It’s your body pH level that when neutral keeps you free from inflammation and disease.

It’s essential oils and herbs and plant-based supplements that support your overall gut health.

Signs that your gut needs some TLC

Tender, loving, care is what you want to give your gut all the time.

Here are 7 ways to tell that your gut is in need of TLC:

  1. Your stomach is upset more often than not
  2. You have a high sugar diet (e.g. processed foods, refined sugar like white rice, white sugar)
  3. You can’t sleep and/or you’re tired all the time
  4. You’re always sick or battling off some kind of cold or illness
  5. Weight swings may signal the inability of your gut being able to absorb nutrients
  6. You develop skin irritation
  7. You develop food intolerances.

Ways to improve your gut health

You can improve your gut health by taking baby steps every day to a more plant-based, toxic-free lifestyle.

  1. Lower your stress – start doing yoga three times a week
  2. Get enough sleep – we heard a few weeks ago from Cristel Mydske who says that sleep is one of three things we can do to kick the diet lifestyle for good.
  3. Eat slowly – Didn’t your mama always tell you to chew your food?!
  4. Stay hydrated! – drink half your body weight in ounces every day
  5. Take a prebiotic and a probiotic (I recommend Life 9 – call me if you’d like to know more)
  6. Check for food intolerances – you can develop food intolerances and allergies as you age, so if you feel uncomfortable in the gut, go see the doctor
  7. Change your diet – Make a point to have a wide variety of fresh vegetables and fruits and whole grains in the house.
