The Key to Happiness… well, one of them

That’s right, I’m talking about Self Awareness.

Self awareness is the ability to take an honest look at your life without any attachment to it being right or wrong, good or bad. ~ Debbie Ford

It’s the first step to living a balanced, fulfilled and happy life, and I’ll tell you why:

Wouldn’t it be grand to go back to when we were kids? Everything new and exciting, full of wonder and curiosity, no right or wrong, just the moment… and living through it…

After that it’s all experience, it’s all understanding… it becomes what we believe and what we think, or in other words, what we are aware of.

We use our experiences, our understanding, our beliefs, our feelings, likes, dislikes, etc. to make choices, to act or react to in any given moment or situation.

When we have a better understanding of our self, as in why we feel what we feel and why we behave the way we do, we are more clear and empowered to create the life we want.

Having clarity around who we are as an individual, we feel more sure of ourselves and more confident to make changes or take chances.

In other words, you are better able to make changes to the way you think, perceive and interpret situations or even people.

From there, you can actually change your emotions, so it’s no wonder why self awareness is a key attribute of Emotional Intelligence and an important factor in achieving success.

Who do you see when you look in the mirror?

Someone who is strong, powerful and confident (like a lion)? or do you see someone who is weak, powerless, and scared?

Whichever one you see is what drives your thoughts, behaviour, and perceptions. Let me make this clear right now: You have the power to change, just say when.

Have you heard this:

Energy flows where your attention goes!

Where you focus your attention, your emotions, reactions, attitude, behaviour, and personality determine where you go in life – it’s that simple.

Have you ever wondered how two different people can experience the exact same situation, but react completely different?

You’re waiting in line and on top of that, you’re running late, do you:

a) huff and puff, cursing everyone in front of you because they’re too slow, so you get angry and flustered and then get snippy with the cashier or

b) wait patiently, it’s not like you can move the line any faster, so why let it get to you.

Having self awareness allows you to see where your thoughts and emotions are taking you. It also allows you to take control of your emotions, behavior, and personality so you can make changes you want. Until you are aware in the moment of your thoughts, emotions, words, and behavior, you will have difficulty making changes in the direction of your life.
