Change. Be adaptable. Get out of your comfort zone. Take chances. Face fears. Any of these sound familiar? They sure do ring a bell for me.

So, why do some people find it so hard to change? Is it fear? Is it laziness? Is it self-doubt?

The first question has a lot or a little to do with the other questions, depending on how small or big the change is.

Let’s be honest, it is easier to keep things as is: status quo. We are our own worst enemies when it comes to change, so I’ve learned and experienced.

Maybe you’ve had this conversation with yourself…

I want to lose 5 pounds, so I could change my eating habits, start going to the gym and feeling better about myself, I could even go on that 5K that I’ve been wanting to do … OR I could just start tomorrow and stay in bed a little longer. I can do that 5K next month/year, when I’m in better shape. Besides, it’s been a bad week so I should take it easy and just eat whatever I want today. Oooo I know, I’ll go to the store to get some chips and find something on Netflix!

What about this one…

I want to go for that job I saw, so I could update my resume, go on the interview, meet new people, learn new skills and processes, get out of my comfort zone… OR I could stay safe and just keep things as is. I’m good at my job, I know everyone already, I know how things work, and I’m making money so I’m good.

I call this battle: The Battle of the Monkey Mind

Change your mindset

Your mind will come up with just about any excuse to not do something. I’m too tired to workout. I’m not qualified for that job. It’s too hard to learn that new skill. I’ll eat better tomorrow. I’ll make my bed later. It’s too cold. It’s too hot. I can’t (insert anything).

I know. I’ve had my fair battles with this cheeky monkey. And it used to win 9.5 times out of 10. Some reasons were because I was afraid, some were because I doubted myself, and some were because I just couldn’t be bothered.

I used to overthink everything, but you know who had it right all along: Nike — JUST DO IT! If you find yourself talking yourself out of what you want to do, STOP: Just do it. Commit. Be accountable.

Someone once told me: When you make a decision, think about what is driving it – Is it fear or is it love? If it’s fear, what are you really afraid of? Failing? What’s the worst that could happen? The most successful people I know fail, but when they fail, they learn from their mistakes and keep moving forward.

Another thing that really helps tame this monkey is: Meditation

Meditation was something I had difficulty doing until I started learning how to breathe. I know, we do it everyday, but I’m talking about really breathing. When I started practicing Yoga, I learned about Pranayama, which translates to ‘breath extension’ or ‘breath control’ from Sanskrit. I found a great intro for Beginner’s Guide to Pranayama in yoga journal, if you want to read a little more and get some beginner exercises. Personally, I enjoy Nadi Shodhana, also known as alternate nostril breathing or channel-cleaning breathing.

I hate to break it to you, but you are the only one that has the power to change your life, to ignite the fire inside of YOU, to accomplish what YOU want to do, and to live the life YOU want. It’s nobody’s fault but your own for how you feel and where you are in your life. Sure, some people have been dealt a better hand, but at the end of the day, that is irrelevant because you have you, and YOU CAN DO ANYTHING!

I believe in you because you have the strongest power of all, so own it, BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!

People find it hard to change because they’re afraid. They’re afraid because of the limits they’ve set for themselves. Reset those limits to infinite, and go for it. You’re going to make mistakes, it’s going to be hard sometimes, but that’s what being a human being is all about — being – isn’t it?
